In a positive step to enhance road safety, the Central Government is planning to introduce a negative points system for driving licenses (DL), according to reports.

Violations like over-speeding and signal jumping would attract negative points on the license and accumulating a certain number of negative points would result in either suspension or cancellation of the DL.

Along With negative points, drivers will also get positive points for good driving and if one exceeds the maximum limit of the negative points, they might face a temporary suspension, while repeat offenders might get a cancellation.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is reportedly preparing to amend the Motor Vehicles Act to include the proposed changes.

The said proposal is likely inspired from countries like Australia, Germany, Brazil, France and Canada who have a similar negative points system..
