The days will start to feel that bit longer from today after the clocks changed overnight.

In the early hours of the morning clocks moved forward by one hour, which means we’ve said goodbye to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and welcomed British Summer Time (BST).

The change happened at 1am, while most of us were probably fast asleep. And it means that Sunday will only have 23 hours – and that we’ll also lose an hours of sleep.

If you’re not sure what the time is right now, you can check by clicking HERE or looking at the clock below (click the link if it doesn’t show). Your mobile phone, tablet or other device should also display the correct time, as long as it’s connected to the internet.

We change the clocks twice a year after Benjamin Franklin first suggested the idea back in 1784. He thought people could enjoy more daylight if they woke up an hour earlier.

However, it wasn’t until 1916 that the UK started changing the clocks with the introduction of the first Daylight Saving Bill.

The clocks don’t turn back again until autumn, so we’ve got a while to enjoy the extra daylight. At 2am on Sunday October 26, the clocks will turn back to 1am.

This means everyone gets an extra hour of sleep. When the clocks are set back, the UK follows Greenwich Mean Time but our nights get darker earlier.
